Pupils Observe Democracy At Work

Pupils Observe Democracy At Work. Pupils and associates standing around a board room table.

HSD pupils had the chance to engage first hand with Scottish politics when they paid a visit to Holyrood.

28 pupils in F4 and F6 recently took part in a trip to the Scottish Parliament to complement their National 5, Higher and AH Modern Studies courses on Democracy in Scotland.

After enjoying a tour of the building and taking in First Minister’s Questions, the pupils made the most of the opportunity to quiz Dundee MSPs Joe Fitzpatrick and Shona Robison in a Q&A session in one of the Parliament’s committee rooms, asking questions on topics including the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the role of the media in Scottish politics. This is an invaluable opportunity for our Advanced Higher pupils to conduct primary research in support of their dissertation work and for our National 5 pupils to put into the context their classroom-based learning of the Scottish Parliament.

Gordon Fyall, Head of History and Modern Studies, said, “It’s always a hugely worthwhile experience for our HSD pupils to be able to visit Holyrood and to see Parliament in action. The pupils really enjoyed having the chance to engage directly with their local MSPs and to put questions to them.”

Thank you to Joe Fitzpatrick MSP and his team for supporting our pupils in being able to visit the Parliament.
