Alick (Sandy) Rouse

1937 - 2025

Mr Rouse (Sandy) retired from his role as Headmaster of Craft & Design, at the end of session, 1997-98, after 25 years of loyal service.

Deputy Rector at the time, G C Stewart wrote a fitting tribute to Sandy on his retiral. “Joining the Technical Department in August 1973, and then being appointed Head of Department in 1990, Mr Rouse brought a powerful enthusiasm and an exceptional talent in craftsmanship, to the high standards of which, his pupils were encouraged to aspire. His problem-solving skills in practical applications, clarity of explanation and close attention to detail have been significant features of an eminently successful teaching career during which he has presented candidates at Ordinary, Standard and Higher grades in Woodwork, Metalwork and Engineering Science, Technical Drawing and Craft and Design

Sandy also served as Form Master and Principal Teacher of Guidance and supported a number of co-curricular activities such as Golf, Hockey, Drama, Duke of Edinburgh and Skiing. As master-in-charge of Skiing he was responsible for our school teams entering the Scottish Schools Ski Association Races with High School teams winning both the Scottish and British Championships. In over 30 ski trips to Italy, Switzerland. France, Austria and the U.S.A., his sound organisation, solid reliability and sense of humour brought an additional and rather special dimension. Sandy Rouse provided a very valuable contribution to the school over a quarter of a century.

Sandy is survived by his sons Paul and Simon.

Paul said “Dad was a rock to me, Simon, Nok, Allison and his much-loved granddaughter Alexandra. His quick wit, dry sense of humour, generosity along with his no-nonsense attitude to life will never be forgotten.”
