Dr. Ian J. Lawrenson 1933 – 2020
Ian was born in Dundee on 13th June 1933 to Marion and Thomas Lawrenson. Thomas was an artist with DC Thomson for his whole working career and also a keen amateur cine-photographer, with Ian being the childhood star in three of his father’s films which won awards around the world, including in the UK, Tokyo and Hollywood.
Enrolling at the School in 1938, in time for its 700th anniversary, Ian excelled academically finishing as Dux and being awarded the School’s
Harris Gold Medal, as well as prizes for science and mathematics.
Douglas M. S. Robbie 1950 – 2020
Douglas Robbie, an HSD Former Pupil from the Class of 1968, passed away peacefully on 27th January 2020 after being diagnosed with lung and liver cancer in November.
Growing up in Dundee, he attended the High School of Dundee before later moving to Strathallan School. Douglas ran Dunlaw House Hotel on Union Road for 30 years and was a well-known figure across the city. After leaving school, he joined the army before becoming part of the Hong Kong Police Force for four years.
Deborah Haring (née Duffy) 1969-2019
Deborah, always Debbie or Debs to her schoolfriends, was born on 19th April 1969 in Edinburgh and brought up in Dundee and Kirkton of Balmerino, by Bill and Ina. She started DHS in L1 and many of the friends she met then remained close friends. Her parents were always most welcoming, and many people will remember happy times spent in Balmerino and her mother’s wonderful food.
David A. Shepherd 1930 – 2019
David Shepherd was born in Dundee on 28th February 1930, the youngest of Andrew Inglis and Marjorie Shepherd’s four children.
Educated at Dundee High School, Mill Hill in London and St Bees in Cumberland (during the war years), David spent his National Service as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in
the New Territories in Hong Kong.
Peter J. Mee 1941 – 2018
Peter was born in June 1941 in North Wales during the second world war. His parents had moved from Liverpool to avoid the Blitz but returned once the war was over. Peter then attended Merchant Taylor’s School before the family relocated to Dundee in the mid-1950s.
Moving to Dundee so that his father could join the firm of Hamilton Carhartts, Peter completed his education at the High School before studying Economics at Caius College in Cambridge. He then went on to train as an accountant, following in his father’s footsteps.
Roger Chawla 1930 – 2019
My brother, Roger, came to HSD in 1939. Our mother had brought my sister, Anne, Roger and me back to her home town whilst our father had returned to the army, and to eventual capture when the Japanese swarmed into Singapore.
To help prepare Roger for L4, a very young Aileen (aka Aggie) Gray came as a tutor to our house on Perth Road, later becoming a long-term family friend.
Margaret A. Ross (née Anderson) 1935 – 2019
Margaret was born in Dundee in 1935, the younger sister of Kathleen and Graeme. Following in her sister’s footsteps, she attended the High School from 1940 until 1953. She always remembered her time there with great fondness. Margaret made many friends during her time at school, in particular, Ismay Scrimgeour (née Ogilvy). Their friendship stood the test of time and lasted her a lifetime.
Harold A. H. Inglis 1935 – 2019
Born in Newport-on-Tay, Harold’s father was the formidable Dr. Alexander Inglis, Principal Teacher of Maths at Bell Baxter High School, a Liverpool University contemporary of Mr ‘Wally’ Marshall ‘Second Master’ i.e. the Deputy Rector, who taught Physics. Prior to her marriage, Harold’s mother had taught at the High School.
Harold joined us in our second year of Senior School, becoming one of the gang from Tayport, Newport and Wormit travelling to and from school by train. Of solid build, he was recently remembered by another old classmate as a reliable player in the 1st XV rugby team.
David H. Tweedie 1934 – 2019
Born in June 1934, David attended the High School of Dundee from 1940 until 1952. Throughout his time at the school, he took part in many activities including the CCF, Rifle Club, the Literary Society as well as being a part of the Rugby Team.
Upon leaving the school, David went on to study Law at the University of Dundee, graduating from the same in 1955. A year later, he was conscripted into the Army Legal Corps and was sent to Hong Kong and Singapore via Karachi and Calcutta.
Brian J. R. Junor 1946 – 2019
Following on from his education at the High School of Dundee, Brian went onto study Medicine at the University of St Andrews, gaining his MBChB in 1970.
A little while later, Brian moved to Aberdeen to train in Renal Medicine. It was here that he completed his MD thesis on a novel form of vitamin D tailored to the needs of patients who suffered with kidney failure, and the debilitating effects on their bones as a result.
Andrew C. Bain 1941 – 2019
Andrew Bain, a well-known farmer in the Carse of Gowrie, passed away on 30th August 2019 following a short fight with cancer. He was 77 years old.
He took over the running of the Flocklones family farm in the early 1960s. His father, also named Andrew, came to the Carse of Gowrie in 1926, aged 22, to set up the farm.
Prof. Michael Rosen CBE 1927 – 2018
Born in October 1927 in Dundee, Michael attended the High School of Dundee until 1944 when he
commenced his medical studies in St Andrews, the first in his family to attend university.
Upon graduating, Michael then joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, where he swiftly rose to the rank
of Captain and served in Egypt.
Joyce Ward (née MacKenzie) 1933 – 2018
Joyce Ward attended the High School of Dundee from 1945 until
1951, along with her sister Muriel. Throughout her time at the
School, Joyce immersed herself in many activities including tennis
and hockey as well as being a member of the Literary Society and the
Girl Guides.
Douglas W. M. Davidson 1928 – 2018
Mr Douglas Davidson or Doug as he was affectionately knownto relatives and close friends, passed away peacefully in
Blairgowrie on 1 February 2018, aged 89.
Born in August 1928, Douglas attended the High School of Dundee until 1947 when he then went on to study at Dundee
School of Pharmacy.
Philippa L. A. Gray (née Cherry) 1965 – 2017
Philippa Gray (née Cherry) was born on 30 March 1965 in Dundee.
She was the youngest daughter of Muir and Elizabeth Cherry and a younger sister to Gavin and Nick Cherry.
Of her time at the High School of Dundee, Philippa always spoke very fondly of the friends she made, many of whom lasted her lifetime.
Upon leaving the School in 1983, Philippa headed north to Aberdeen to study for her BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics at Robert Gordon’s
Institute of Technology (RGIT), now known as Robert Gordon’s University.
Patricia A. G. Barnsley (née Younger) 1934 – 2017
Attending the High School of Dundee in the 1940s, Ann formed many great friendships with her classmates, particularly with close friend
I. Jean Miller (née Ogilvie).
Upon leaving the School in 1952, Ann went on to study at the University of St Andrews where she later graduated with a degree in English and History.
Nicholas P. Tott 1960 – 2017
Leaving the High School of Dundee in the 1970s, Nicholas went on to study Law at University before paving a very
successful career path. He qualified with Dundas & Lawson before joining Herbert Smith in December 1986,
progressing on to becoming a Partner by 1992.
Dr. Gillon C. Ferguson 1936 – 2017
Upon leaving the School, Gillon went on to study medicine at the
University of St Andrews where he qualified with his MBChB in
1960. After taking up various training positions across Scotland,
he then began working at the Royal Brompton Hospital in
London.
Marion Buik (née Ogilvy) 1939 – 2017
Following in the footsteps of her old sister, Marion joined the
High School of Dundee in 1944 where she made many lifelong
friends. Whilst at the School, she actively participated in a range
of activities and always spoke very fondly of her classes with her
drama teacher Miss Wright.
The Very Rev James Weatherhead 1931 – 2017
James Weatherhead, born in 1931, attended The High School of
Dundee from 1936 to 1949, with the exception of one year when
he was evacuated to Alyth during the war. He very much enjoyed
being a member of the Rifle Club, as well as captaining the
Hockey Team 2nd XI. A part of Wallace House, he was also an
avid reader.
